12 - The Hanged Man | ||
After several days The Fool arrives at a town and wanders into a grand vaulted building. The interior walls had been painted many years ago to look like a magnificent baronial hall or cathedral. They are at the same time both now - and then. Simultaneously suspended in the past and present. Elderly men sit at tables reading newspapers or gossiping. One of them tells The Fool that after many years of toil, this is what they do every day. It is very pleasant and he is invited to join them. The Fool offers his thanks. Tempted though he is, he knows that acceptance might delay his journey for ever. |
